August Reading

August Reading

Each month I share my reading. I think reading is an important thing for folks to do. It stretches us in so many ways. (I talked about this in an episode of Stuff I Want to Say).

So here is my August reading. I’m shooting to push into at least 5 books this month.

August Reading

Leading Kingdom Movements | Mike Breen
I’ll admit I have a preacher/theologian crush in Mike Breen. I think I’m about to launch into a phase where I end up reading (or re-reading) most of his works. It fits where I am in my leadership right now at church and where I feel things are going. Leading Kingdom Movements is one of his later books, so it takes a bit of going back at his whole big picture, but it is a fantastic read on the biblical idea of movements and what it looks like to create sustainable movements in our own context.

The Jesus Way | Eugene Peterson
I’ve had this book on my shelf for years. A former collegue gave it to me when they were clearing out their library. It is a fantastic look at the way Jesus calls us to present ourselves and how the Jesus way of life is woven throughout the stories of scripture. It was fantastic…but it was Peterson. When is Peterson not fantastic?

Jesus Burgers: True Stores of Love, Redemption & Miracles in a College Town | Jason Lomelino *
A staff member told me about this crazy ministry in California that gives free burgers away once a week. The idea sounded right up my alley, and he told me there was a book about it. I made it around half-way through. I wanted it to be more of a praxis type book, but it is primarily testimonies of people who are part of the ministry. Great read…just decided to not finish it. If you are interested in the ministry in a more expansive way…just do a youtube search. There are several different videos about their ministry and you can figure out the ministry design through them.

*  I’ve started to intentionally “not finish” books. I make myself read more than half of it, and I have to have a good reason why it is considered “done” without being finished. I’ve decided to list them here as well.

Stuff I Want to Say 007 | JR Forasteros and The Devil

Stuff I Want to Say 007 | JR Forasteros and The Devil

Stuff I want to say is a *hopeful weekly show in which I share stuff I want to say. Sounds simple…right?

One of the things I have been excited about since the beginning of this new show is sharing conversations with friends that I think have something to share. My buddy JR Forasteros is the author of the fantastic book Empathy for the Devil. Last year, after preaching a sermon about the devil, I had JR on another podcast to talk about his book and some of the ways he feels we learn from the stories of villains in the bible. I wanted to replay it for you here on SIWTS.

My favorite part of this conversation is the one where he talks about a Biblical Theology of the Devil, and discerning the who, what, where and why from the tiny bits and pieces we have learned about him in the scriptures.

* I hope to make this weekly, but let’s just call it a hope.

July Reading

July Reading

Each month I like to list out the books I have read. This past month, well, let’s just call it a bust. I did go on vacation and had a pretty big administrative month, but that still isn’t a big excuse. But the month is over and I’ll call it for what it was.

Books I read in July
The Flying Tigers: the Untold Story of the American Pilots Who Waged a Secret War Against Japan | Sam Kleiner
I live in Monroe, La, which is the home of Gen. Claire Chennault made his home in his later life. I grew up in Alexandria, La, in which the descendants of this group were flying out of during Desert Storm/Shield. I also spend a fair amount of time bellied up to the bar at Flying Tiger Brewery. So the title instantly caught me. I found this book at a beachside bookshop and read it in two days. It was a fantastic read for anyone into American or military history.

Make sure to catch the archives for other months “What I’ve Read” posts.
